Kenya's two traditional rainy seasons are compressing into shorter, more intense events with longer dry spells between them. Crops now routinely experience moisture stress at critical growth stages not because of insufficient rainfall, but because water arrives outside the crop's biological window. This is not a soil problem or a seed problem. It is a water storage problem.

Groundwater Depletion
As irrigation adoption grows across Kenya, so does pressure on underground water sources. Aquifer levels across the Central Highlands, Rift Valley, and peri-urban zones are dropping faster than natural recharge allows, raising pumping depths, increasing energy costs, and eroding the long-term viability of groundwater as a reliable irrigation source.

Surface water ponds lose enormous volumes to evaporation and harbour mosquitoes, algae, and waterborne contaminants. Standard surface tanks bridge short dry spells but cannot provide the year-round reliable supply needed to shift from subsistence to commercial farming. No existing solution combines underground storage, solar pumping, precision irrigation, and IoT monitoring at smallholder price points.

The Core Insight

Rainfall in East Africa is not declining. It is becoming erratic. Capture rain when it falls, store it where it cannot evaporate, and deliver it when crops need it — and our calculations suggest agricultural viability can be restored regardless of what climate change does to rainfall timing. The technology has existed for decades. What is new is assembling it into an affordable, warranted, IoT-connected system at smallholder price points and structuring that system as a bankable asset that Kenyan agricultural lenders can finance.

A new asset class for Kenyan agricultural lending.

A warranted 20-year underground cistern with documented IoT performance data is collateral. It changes the conversation with agricultural lenders from an unsecured loan request to a structured, asset-backed financing facility. MajiDepot's Phase 2 and Phase 3 data collection is designed from the outset to generate the income documentation, repayment evidence, and asset valuation methodology that a dedicated agricultural lending facility requires. The 500-site Phase 3 target represents the threshold at which a dedicated lending product becomes viable for a major Kenyan bank.

Water Balance Field Study

Phase 1 is an IoT-enabled water balance field study on a 0.25-acre farm in Londiani, Kericho County. Five sensors track every litre entering and leaving the system across three growing seasons, generating the measured data that determines the cistern size, pump specification and construction model for Phase 2.

A business development and engineering leader with over 13 years of experience spanning agriculture, renewable energy, manufacturing and technology. Bett holds a BSc in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the University of Nairobi and has led organisations across East Africa in sales strategy, operations, grant fundraising and investor engagement.

Before founding Futuris Infrastructure, Bett served in various leadership and commercial roles where he secured over $250,000 grant from funders such as Efficiency for Access and led company acceptance into programmes such as European Get.Invest Programme. He has represented African agri-tech companies at international platforms including GOGLA, Sankalp, and VC4A; and has delivered projects ranging from a WFP Sprint Challenge in Kakuma to solar microgrid installations across Kenya.

At Futuris, Bett is building MajiDepot as the first product on a proprietary AI-powered IoT platform, alongside Chilly, a solar cold chain solution for agricultural produce launching in 2028.
